An Native American artist, politician, and former principal chief of the Seminole Nation of Oklahoma will be coming to Coulee Dam to give a presentation in the Lake Roosevelt High School gym on Thursday, April 13.

Enoch Kelly Haney will be giving a motivational speech to sixth- through eighth-grade students from Nespelem and Lake Roosevelt schools from 9:15 a.m. until 10:05 a.m.

The speech will address such topics including goal setting, as well as overcoming challenges to achieve success.

An accomplished sculptor, Haney’s works include “Chickasaw Horse and Rider,” and “the Guardian,” a 22-foot-tall bronze piece that sits on top of the Oklahoma State Capitol.

Haney, 76, an Oklahoma native, served in the Oklahoma State Senate and House of Representatives for 22 years, the first full-blooded native American to serve in either of the houses in Oklahoma.

Haney was also a consultant and narrator for the Discovery Channel’s TV documentary series “How the West was Lost,” among other television work.

Haney has received over 80 lifetime achievement awards and honors from various organizations, including the Indian Heritage Award from the Five Civilized Tribes Museum, an Honorary Doctor of Laws from Oklahoma City University, and Oklahoma Legislator of the Year, among other accolades.

“Kelly’s message will be inspirational and motivational,” said Bert Smith, a former Coulee Dam High School graduate who helped organize bringing Haney to the area. “He will provide outstanding wisdom to native and non-native American students on how to use your talents to achieve your goals, how to represent the Native American community, and how to achieve success through hard work.”

“I’m excited that he’s coming with all his life experience in so many different areas,” said Kim Stanger, Indian Education director at Lake Roosevelt. “I’m hoping he will encourage the kids to follow their dreams, their hopes, and to never give up.”
