The Raider tennis doubles team of Jordan Charles and John Drapela traveled to Omak last weekend to try to make it to the state tournament, falling short of that goal by one match.

In the first match of the day, Charles and Drapela faced the district tournament’s top seed from Chelan. They tried hard but fell short by the match scores of 6-3, 6-3.

In their first consolation match, the team faced Flodin and Brulotte from Cascade. After losing the first set, Charles and Drapela forged ahead to take the victory 4-6, 6-4, 6-4.

Charles and Drapela still needed to win one more match to be seeded to state. In their way was the duo from Okanogan — Max Cheeseman and Jay Nearents, the number-one seed for the Bs to whom Charles/Drapela had lost twice before.

Determined to get the first win over the Bulldog duo, Charles and Drapela gave it all they had, challenging Cheeseman/Nearents in the second set.

“The match was much closer than the score indicates,” Raider Head Coach Steve Archer said. “We were back and forth in almost every game.”

The LR team won two in a row to pull up 3-4, but Okanogan won the next two to put it away 6-1, 6-3.

Archer stated that he was proud of the way Charles and Drapela played in the district tournament.
