A spaghetti dinner set for Saturday will help fund a project that brings together sixth graders from Coulee Dam and Nespelem schools to pave their way as eventual classmates in high school.

The Grand Coulee Dam Rotary Club chose to work with the sixth graders for the annual fund raiser, possibly instilling an early lesson in community service.

The sixth-graders help by serving at the dinner, giving them experience in working in volunteer community service and working with the public. And the arrangement helps instill the notion that good things come through work for them.

The annual trip to the Tall Timbers Camp near Leavenworth is designed to build relationships and get the kids to work together. The first one took place 2012, and school officials say the sixth-grade students now look forward to the experience, while those in seventh grade wish they could still go.

The club hopes to make enough at the spaghetti dinner to make up any needed difference in funding for the trip, plus bring in funds for other club projects.

The two school districts and their respective parent committees contribute the bulk of the funding for the trip.

The doors open for the dinner at 4:30 p.m. at the Coulee Dam Town Hall.

Rotary club members and sixth-graders have tickets, and admission can be paid at the door. Individual tickets are $10. Family tickets are $25.
