Lake Roosevelt wrestling competed in the first tournament of the season at Davenport Saturday, where the Raiders held their own and impressed the coaches in their first outing.

"We had a good start and wrestled well for this early part of the season," Head Coach Steve Hood said.

The team had one senior, one sophomore and four freshman wrestling at the tournament.

"They all wrestled hard and up to their potential for this point in the season," Hood said, noting his young, light Raiders were 12-7 in matches wrestled.

Freshman Kaleb Horn won the 106-pound bracket, and at 120 pounds, senior Jacob Smith was also crowned champion of his bracket.

Freshman Tony Nichols, at the tough, 132-pound weight class, finished third in his first high school tournament.

Sophomore Ryan Moon, at 138 pounds, placed fourth for his first placing in a high school wrestling tournament.

Freshmen Taylor and Trevor Circle also wrestled for LR at 120 and 138 respectively. They did not place, but are gaining good experience for later matches.

Tonight at 6 p.m., the Raiders have a home mixer in Gailord Nelson Gym. Teams from Chelan, Brewster, Wilbur-Creston-Keller, and Davenport will be there. The goal of the mixer is to get all wrestlers present two matches. There is no team scoring at a mixer.

On Saturday, the Raiders will take part in the Connell Tourney starting at 10 a.m. This tourney will feature many 1A and 2A schools, making it a good tournament competition-wise and for the Raider wrestles to gauge what they still need to improve on for the next round of the season.
