Ten Years go

Sunbanks Lake Resort will begin construction of 11 villas in September and they will be ready for occupancy by the summer tourist season, chamber of commerce members learned Thursday.

The town of Coulee Dam is going ahead with a sidewalk project along the Columbia Avenue, despite strong opposition from residents who fear the intentional cutting of roots will kill the town’s big trees.

The Delano Landfill has only about a year and a half to go before it reaches its capacity.

Foisy and Kennedy Inc. will move to its new location at 309 Midway Avenue in Grand Coulee this week.

Twenty Years Ago

The body of a man who drowned in the Devil’s Canyon area in early May was discovered floating in Lake Roosevelt last week by passing boaters.

For the first time, the Nespelem School District will be asking voters to approve a levy this fall. The two-year levy will be on the September ballot, giving the district its first chance to capture “state levy-equalization” dollars.


Officials announced last week that the new casino in Coulee Dam will officially open this Saturday, long before the second story of the building is complete.

Thirty Years Ago

It was fun day Saturday when the first play began at Bank Lake Golf and Country Club.

David Sanford is the first recipient of the Coby Dean Casebeer Memorial Scholarship for $1,000.

The GCD Yacht Club open house at Eden Harbor served about 100 people with free German sausages, salad and beverage.

Forty Years Ago

Tracy Turner a junior at Eastern Washington State College has received a renewal of an EWSC Alumni Association Scholarship for 1975-76. Turner is majoring in professional accounting.

The first place team in the girls’ minor league softball included Rosie Atchison, Lori Adolph, Cindy Boggs, Glennis Ware, Maria Daniels, Dets Daniels, Darlene Stanczak, KeAna Wapato, Billie Jo Cleveland, Jackie Palmer, D’Ann Stoddard and Trina Sanders.

The Washington State Parks and Recreation Commission will start action this week for the establishment of a food, beverage, grocery and fishing equipment concession at Steamboat Rock State Park.

Fifty Years Ago

Two Boy Scouts, Bill Roberson, and Joe Ridlington have received Eagle Scout Awards.

Thousands of campers have moved in on the campsites in the area and were also roughing it on the sagebrush flats.

Sixty Years Ago

Large crowds attended a two-day motorboat regatta held at Electric City/Grand Coulee Beach (Coulee Playland).

Three Girl Scouts from Grand Coulee receiving the Curved Bar Award in Intermediate Scouting included Rozeln Prohaska, Lana Hartig and Kathy Seresun.

Seventy-Nine Years Ago

For the first time in the damsite’s history, baseball fans will be able to watch a baseball game under the lights next Wednesday at the Walsh Stadium in Mason City. The Grand Coulee Pioneers will play the Canadian Clowns starting at 8:30 p.m.

A question that commercial groups take steps to set up an organization thoroughly and favorably publicize the need for completion of the Columbia Basin Project is made by the Washington State Chamber of Mines. The chamber calls attention to the fact that in the East the Grand Coulee Dam is being classed with the Florida Canal and Passamaquoddy Project and that an organization to spread the truth about the dam is needed.
