An outdoor native American art exhibit last weekend drew a dozen artists for a first-of-its kind show.

On Midway Ave. across from Coulee Hardware in the parking lot of Body by Dam, the judged show and market featured several artists from across the northwest and a style not often seen.

You may be familiar with the art of coastal tribes with stylized whale images, for example. Or you might readily recognize the art of Southwest tribes, with prominent turquoise and silver.

But this show was called "The First Ever Plateau Native Art Exhibit."

The event was coordinated by the Northwest Native Development Fund.

A beaded necklace by Roma Tynan took first place. A beaded leather regalia, by Aurolyn Stwyer of Warm Springs, Oregon, took second place.

Jeanne Jerred, of Keller, took third with an intricately beaded hand bag.

"There were so many other great works presented for the judges. It was really hard to choose," commented Ted Piccolo of NNDF.

"Diane Covington from the Spokane Reservation burst onto the art scene with her paintings while sitting next to accomplished artist Cheryl Grunlose," he noted.

"Charles Garcia introduced us to his new form of beaded sketch art and Stephanie Marchand showed some absolutely beautiful portraits using all kinds of mediums," he added on a company Facebook post.
