Kristen Shields, 2000 graduate of Lake Roosevelt, took the national championship in the 100 meter dash Saturday. Shields just graduated with a 4.0 from Whitworth College and a math degree. Kristen is the daughter of Bruce and Cathy Shields of Grand Coulee.

Members of Boy Scout Troop 107 took part in a flag folding demonstration Monday, folding the American Flag in the traditional and proper way. This took place at the Isle of Flags celebration, on Memorial Day, where 16 new flags were dedicated in the service. 

20 Years Ago

The owner of the former Mom's Tavern is protesting charges assessed against the city for costs incurred in the burning down of the city landmark in Grand Coulee. A lien was placed on the property two weeks ago for $4,349.47. This is for the cost of firemen burning down the building and for the clean up afterwards.

After 30 years in education ,Jim Parker, Lake Roosevelt High School principle is all set to retire. Parker said "I can't think of anything that I would have enjoyed more" Coaching was his highlight he added "to bring kids together and form a team where everyone is pulling together, now that's excitement." He plans on relaxing and golfing in his retirement.

The Graduating Class of 1984 received their diplomas this week with 92 young adults made the walk across the stage at Lake Roosevelt gymnasium. Valedictorian, Deana Brown and Salutatorian, Spencer Morley, led the way for a talented class ready to take on tomorrow. 

40 Years Ago

JP Green, Acting Operations Manager of the BOR Grand Coulee Dam Operations Office, presented a 30 years of service award to Thomas Brunstad and two 20 year service awards to Wayne Monteith and Ray Kehrer this week in a ceremony at Grand Coulee Dam.

50 Years Ago

Ben J. Zlateff of Coulee Dam was presented the Red Tag Trophy during ceremonies at Washington State University by Lt. Col. Bill Knight. The award goes to an outstanding Air Force ROTC cadet for performance during leadership training. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Bennie Zlateff of Coulee Dam.

60 Years Ago

About 6 p.m., Saturday two and a half miles south of Nespelem, a one car accident killed two people. Frances Marion Ives, 39, and Alice Simpson, 26, according to the police report, lost control on a turn, the car rolled several times and came to rest on the highway. Three other occupants were in the car and were all treated at the hospital.
