A capital improvements levy to support the Grand Coulee Dam School District appears to have passed in Tuesday’s election with more than 55 percent of the vote.

The levy will enable safety, technology and facilities improvements in the district and then let it pay for some items that otherwise would have come from its general fund as the transition is made to the new system of financing basic education in the state.

In other contested primary elections, 4th District incumbent Republican Congressman Dan Newhouse led Democrat Christine Brown 63-38 percent.

For the 5th Congressional District, Republican incumbent Cathy McMorris Rodgers was virtually tied with Democrat Lisa Brown at 47.52-47.09 percent.

Incumbent U.S. Sen. Maria Cantwell led Republican Susan Hutchison, who had 24 percent of the vote to Cantwell’s 55 percent.

For State Legislative District 12’s representative for position 1, Republican Keith Goehner led independent Ann Diamond 45 percent-29 percent. A Democrat on the ballot, C. Keiki Stacy Wriggle, garnered 16.24 percent, which Diamond could pick up in November. Add Republican JD Greening’s 9.41 percent to the mix, and it’s a race.

Rep. Mike Steele the Republican incumbent, garnered 60 percent of the vote, to face Democrat Valerie Sarratt (33 percent) in November.

In LD 13, Republican Mat Manweller commanded a 68 percent to 32 percent lead over Democrat Sylvia Hammond for position 2. Tom Dent, also a Republican held his lead 70-30 percent over Jesse Oakey for LD 13’s position 1.

In LD 7, Joel Kretz, Republican incumbent, got 63 percent of the vote to face Democrat Crystal Oliver (15 percent) in November.

Those prevailing in Grant County elections were Michele Jaderlund with 66 percent for auditor, Cindy Carter (53 percent) for District 3 commissioner, Tom Jones for sheriff (82 percent), and Darryl Pheasant for treasurer (54 percent).

In Okanogan County, Tony Hawley (26.73 percent) will likely face Steve Brown (26.72) for sheriff in the fall. Cari Hall carried 57 percent of the vote for auditor, Jim DeTro got 68 percent for commissioner. And Arian Noma took 59 percent for prosecuting attorney.

In Douglas County, Kevin Morris led with 62 percent for sheriff, and Marc Straub had 64 percent for commissioner.
