Agencies that control most of the public lands in the region have issued restrictions on the use of fire.

“Fire restrictions on lands administered by the Bureau of Reclamation have been modified to prohibit the building, maintaining, attending or using a fire of any type, including charcoal briquette fires,” a press release from the Bureau of Land Management states.

The BLM has an agreement with the USBR to operate on their lands for fire management purposes.

“An exemption is made for liquefied and bottled gas stoves and heaters, provided they are used within an area at least 10 feet in diameter that is barren or cleared of all flammable material,” the press release continued.

“In addition to prohibiting campfires, restrictions on the use of off-road vehicles, smoking, shooting of exploding targets and the use of fireworks is still in effect.”

Target shooting is also being restricted due to the high fire danger in the state, the ban being implemented on 3 million acres of DNR-managed lands, as well as on Washington Department of Fish & Wildlife lands.

DNR Commissioner Franz is encouraging private landowners to consider target shooting restrictions on their own lands, an Aug. 3 press release said.

The target shooting ban is expected to last through Sept. 30, but may be extended or shortened based upon ongoing fire conditions. The agency is encouraging target shooters to visit local private and public target range facilities during this time.

This temporary rule does not restrict hunting, as firearms are discharged less frequently.

The National Park Service in July closed the Lake Roosevelt National Recreation Area to fires, including “campfires in all undeveloped park-managed lands, including all exposed lakebed as well as charcoal fires, tiki torches, incense burners, candles, and propane campfires,” but still allowed campfires in park-provided fire rings and barbecue boxes, self-contained propane or gas stoves and lanterns.
