Here's what the levy would do

Next month, local voters will have the opportunity to approve the Capital Project Levy for the Grand Coulee Dam School District. This is only a supplemental levy that will address facility and safety needs of the district, as well as offset lost funding from the state. This would not result in an increase of your taxes. The Capital Project Levy’s value would be seen in updated technology, facility improvements, better communication infrastructure, and increased security/safety measures.

I’d like to discuss that last item first. The biggest priority for the school district is the safety of the students –the kids in your family and the kids in your neighborhood. If funding is continued through this supplemental levy, it would pay for security cameras and a PA system where students walk to classes between the main school and old high school. The levy would also help streamline flow of information between the main offices and the old high school classrooms, providing immediate PA communication rather than a series of phone calls.

Continuing this funding would fill other needs as well. This means updated computers and software to support student learning. It would also mean improvements to school facilities. It’s easy to get caught up in thinking Lake Roosevelt is just the new school building. Don’t forget that the ALE is starting up again at the old middle school, and the HVAC systems there and in the old high school gym are in need of an overhaul.

Keep an eye out for your ballot – it should be in your mailbox by July 23. Be sure to get it in the mail or your local ballot box by August 7. And as you cast your vote, please remember this would not increase the taxes coming out of your pocket, but would help maintain current levels of funding for our schools. With increased safety measures, updated technology, and environmental systems, it’s easy to see the value of approving the Capital Project Levy.

The community has done a fantastic job supporting the schools – thank you. It couldn’t happen without all of you backing the Lake Roosevelt students and staff!

Thank you,
