The mayor of Elmer City resigned unexpectedly in a letter the city received on May 15.

Former Mayor Gail Morin later told The Star that she had been considering resigning for a while.

“It is mostly health issues that I didn’t have last Spring when I filed,” she said in an email. “The next three years will need someone with more energy than me. Elmer City will be fine. Someone will step up.”

Councilmember Jesse Tillman, the mayor pro tempore, will take Morin’s place in the meantime until the next Elmer City council meeting on June 14 at 7 p.m.

The city is currently accepting letters of interests from citizens interested in the mayoral position, as well as for council positions, according to Town Clerk Gary Benton. Councilmember Joaquin Marchand resigned his position at the last council meeting on May 10.

At the June 14 meeting, the council will vote on a new council member based on letters of interest, and then vote for someone to be mayor. The mayor pro tempore is the tiebreaker in such scenarios.

If a council member is voted in as mayor, then that council seat will be filled in the July 12 council meeting.

The newly elected mayor and council member(s) will fill these seats until the November 2019 election.
