Another homecoming is in the books at Lake Roosevelt High School and out of all the fun a serious community need was met.

When leadership students Alan Nordine and Blossom Armstrong were asked to head up the community service aspect of Homecoming Week, they researched many ideas, said the leadership class teacher, Lori Adkins.

The students considered national and statewide needs. Many worth causes existed, but one stood out to them right here at home, Adkins said. When contacting the local food bank the students discovered the food at this time was well-stocked, but users of the food bank often need items not typically found there, items like soap, shampoo, deodorant, wipes, and diapers.

Hence, the Personal Hygiene Donation Drive was born.

LRHS classes began competing against each other to see which group could bring in the most items to help secure the school's coveted Spirit Competition Championship.

Carol Nordine, coordinator of the Care and Share Food Bank, was thrilled on pick-up day.

"That is a lot!" Nordine said. "I mean that is really a lot (of items) and for a need not often thought of."

Leadership teacher Lori Adkins praised her students for their organization of Homecoming Week and especially of the donation drive project. She also thanked the LRHS students and staff for helping out the community in such a massive way.
