For the first time Grand Coulee High School Alumni Association is awarding scholarships to graduating seniors from schools other than Lake Roosevelt High School. Scholarships in the amount of $500 each were awarded to five graduating seniors: Brooklyn Reichlin, Electric City, LRHS senior who plans to attend SFCC; Erica Diane Leffel, Ritzville; Nicole Coppersmith, Davenport; and Jacob Marshall, Wilbur. The last three are eligible because of their grandmother, Margaret Rice Kendall (’51) and Colt Sanford, Harrington, whose late great-grandfather, Frank Sanford (’37), grandfather, Del Sanford (’60), grandfather, Glenn “Bugs” Shear (’65), and grandmother, Linda “Sue” Jasper Shear (’66), all attended school in District 55. Erica and Nicole plan to attend WSU; Jacob, SCC; and Colt, Walla Walla Community College.

Receiving the first three continuing education scholarships for $500 each for those who have successfully completed at least one year of college and are direct descendants of former Grand Coulee District 55 students are Kimberly Kidder, Graham, Wash., granddaughter of Susan Fahr Miller (’64); and Melissa Talley, Olympia, Wash., granddaughter of James Glick (’57). Kimberly and Melissa will both be juniors at Central Washington University in the fall. The third recipient is Taylor Haven, Elyria, Ohio, who will be a junior at Bowling Green State University. Taylor’s eligibility is through his father, Gary Haven, who attended elementary school in District 55 and his grandparents, Ed (’52) and Carolyn Bowman Haven (’58).

The Association was able to award more than the usual number of scholarships this spring because of the large number of new members who registered at the All Class Reunion last August. The money awarded each year comes from membership dues of $10 a year per member or the Lifetime Membership of $500 for an individual or couple. The next All School Reunion will be held the second weekend of August 2020.
