Small and quiet

A Northern Saw-whet Owl peers out from a pine perch at Steamboat Rock State Park Jan. 22. The nocturnal birds are small, just 7 or 8 inches long, but are fierce hunters of small mammals. The bird is named for the sound of its call, said to resemble a saw being sharpened on a whetting stone. - Roy Myers photo
