Recent victim feels as much sadness as anger

I have been following with great interest/alarm the news about recent thefts in the coulee area. Unfortunately I have found myself a recent theft victim. The item taken did not have a great monetary value (it was a Halloween decoration) but more sentimental value as a friend had drawn hand-made designs on the large plastic skull to make it spooky/cool looking.

I felt as much sadness as anger at the theft. Sad that items that aren’t tied down can’t be left outside anymore. And anger that someone would feel they have the right to take something that I have put out every year for the enjoyment of my neighbors/kids, trick-or-treaters.

I saw no point in reporting the theft, especially with our shortened police force working on so many other thefts/cases. I don’t think it is only just a drug probem (although it is out of control everywhere, not just coulee country) but also a cultural issue where people just don’t respect boundaries/other peoples property like they should. If whomever took my Halloween skull decoration would like to return it (I don’t have high hopes but …) no questions/action would be taken.

Here’s hoping everyone has a happy and safe remainder fall/Halloween season.
