On a rainy and cold Tuesday morning, Nov. 15, Coulee Community Hospital was evacuated after financial counselor Lou Pickering took a call at the front desk at about 11:50 a.m. from an unidentified woman who said, "There is a bomb in your hospital," and hung up. Twenty five nursing home patients and the hospital's single patient in the acute care facility were taken by ambulance, van and the hospital's laundry truck to the Eagles Lodge on B Street. About 26 clinic patients had to reschedule appointments but the hospital's first laproscopic colisystectomy had just started when the threat came in so Dr. Gene Goss and the surgery team continued as planned. Local police and USBR personnel conducted a systematic search of the hospital for one and a half hours, starting with the surgery recovery area. Nothing was found and by 1:45 p.m., patients and personnel were returning to the hospital.

The caller gave an 800 number but has not called again as he said he would.
