74 Years Ago - Winter at Grand Coulee Dam - 1940

On Monday, Nov. 15, the Colville Tribes' fish and wildlife dept. released 712 rainbow trout, weighing an average of 5.35 pounds, in to Lake Rufus Woods at Ed Scahllenberger's net pen site about 16 miles downriver from Grand Coulee Dam. Another 86,000 triploid rainbow trout (fish with three sets of chromosomes instead of two) that were too small to release, weighing in now at three to a pound and approximately five inches in length, were purchased by the Tribes from Schallenberger and about half of the smaller fish will be released in LRW later this month. The others or about 43,000 fish will go to the Tribes' hatchery where they will be fed and raised for several more months, then planted in interior reservation lakes, likely Twin Lakes and Buffalo Lake in the spring.

Billy Nicholson, new head coach for the 2004-05 Lady Raiders basketball team, said 28 students answered the opening call Monday and will compete for a chance to play varsity ball. Five veterans, Jessica Loe, Tiffany Berry, Amanda Marchand, Rhonda St. Pierre, and Heather Circle, tried out. The Lady Raiders will travel to Warden for their opening game on Nov. 30.

Police were involved in a high speed chase traveling north on the Lower River Road Oct.27 when a driver was clocked at 50 mph, reaching 70 mph before pulling over near Elmer City. The driver said he didn't realize anyone was following him and asked the officer to give him a break.He added that he attends church with Police Chief Tom Edwards and asked the officer if that would make a difference. Police issued the driver a $133 speeding ticket.

Grand Coulee Rebekah Lodge #315 elected officers for 1995 at the Nov 1 meeting as follows: Noble Grand, Sandra Sheely; Vice Grand, Jane Rollins; Secretary, Betty Roller; Financial Secretary, D.J. Brenchley; Treasurer, Dot Kelly; and Trustee, Dorothy Glick. The Coulee Dam Rebekah Lodge #325 recently elected new officers for 1995 with installation set for January: Noble Grand, Willetta Mays; Vice Grand, Alta Wheler; Secretary, Connie Seaver; Treasurer, Linda Braunstein; and Trustee, Evelyn Easling Smith.

The Washington State Liquor Board has been asked reconsider its denial of liquor licenses, Class EF to sell beer and wine for home consumptions, to two local mini markets: Midway Mini Mart, Grand Coulee, owners Mary Ann and Barney Berland; and Coulee Express Mini Market, owned by Richard and Fe'Gregorio Taylor, Coulee Dam.

Airman Sandra L. McClure, daughter of the Ken McClures of Coulee Dam, has graduated at Lackland Air Force Base in Texas from the U.S. Air Force Security Police course She is a 1972 graduate from Lake Roosevelt High School and attended Spokane Community College prior to joining the Air Force.

Lance Corporal Kevin Cammack, Marines, is now stationed at Okinawa, Japan, having joined up in June, 1973 for four years. He's the son of the Ken Cammacks of Lone Pine and is being trained as an electronics tech. Also stationed at Okinawa is Lance Corporal Paul Otis Tillman, D Company, Third Marine Division. He is the son of the Jim Tillman of Elmer City. And just finishing up boot camp at Fort Ord, Calif. is James Cammack, the younger son of Kevin, who will be stationed at Fort Bliss, Texas. He is receiving training in intercontinental missile operations.

John Pryor won the High School State A Cross-Country race in Seattle on Saturday, covering the 2.5 mile course in 12 minutes, 41 seconds. He was 11 seconds ahead of the second place winner, Gary Gonser of Castle Rock. The Raiders finished in fifth place out of 20 teams at State and also won their league and district championships this season. Pryor's teammates are: Rick George, Darry Moulton, John Womer, Gary Clark, Brian Barnaby and Duane Johnson.

The Shoot's organizers will provide the shells and award prizes of trophies and turkeys donated by Good Deal Foods, Coulee Dam, Safeway, Grand Coulee and the local Rotary Club.

In it's final act, the Coulee Country CB (Columbia Basin Merchants) Club donated a 25" color television set and a scale with a platform to weight patients in wheelchairs to the Coulee Community Nursing Home. At the ceremony were Bea Gray, Lessie Eby, Pat Anson, Beryle Gordon, Dorothy Jameson, Maxine Anson, Clara Simonson, Jim Gordon, Elsie Strickert, Olga Nichols, and Dave Portch of Loepp's Furniture, donating a tv stand.
