With the third year of the Community Oriented Policing Services (COPS) grant ending, the Grand Coulee Dam School District is seeking alliance with local cities to fund the fourth year and possibly extend the program for a second term. Administered by the federal Dept. of Justice, COPS has invested $10.6 billion in 50 states to put police officers in schools and other crime preventative measures. Joe Pakootas, chairman of the Colville Business Council, said he’s happy about the deal with the Douglas County Public Utility District, signed in Wenatchee Nov. 1, commenting “The Tribe is finally going to receive some significant compensation for its past damages (at Wells Dam). The agreement includes a lump sum payment of $13.5 million which the PUD will finance by selling bonds thus creating debt through August 2018. 20 years ago

The Coulee Dam Business Association hosted a thank you breakfast for the volunteers who worked at the Tourist Information Center over the summer. Held at the Four Winds Guest House with Dick and Fe Taylor and Martha Medler hosting, group leader Ellie Brado and chairman Taylor expressed appreciation to the many volunteers including attendees: Jane Elliott, Irene Stallman, Ted and Betty Davis, Esther Rice, Irene Wedeward, Lleta English, Chuck and Linda Hall, Jack and Pat Barnard, Alice Doppler, Gerry Tays, Kackl Reiley, Ellis Brado, Mary Lou Nuvelli, Troy Reit, Dixie Hauser and Gary Reit.

The Planet Earth Players, under the direction of Dr. Robert Skordas,will star in “Exit The Body.” Players include: Paula Reit, a clothing designer; Vince Peasley, a mysterious body; Thibault Comhaire, the writer’s husband; Joan Parker, the mystery writer; Maryann Winn, her secretary; Frank Ayers, a bumbling crook; Erik Lampi, the local sheriff; Dave Touchette, the designer’s husband; Sarah Nelson, the maid; and Constance Wilson, a real estate agent.

The Ponderosa Camera Club will meet in the conference room at the Coulee Community Church Oct.22 featuring four Kodack educational programs and members are requested to bring 2-3 of their best slides from the past year. Two slides will chosen for the traveling salon. Anne Hartman of Coulee Dam won first and second place for her photos titled Old Glory and Evening Shadows in the recent Kodack show, An Introduction to Photography.

Halloween had its share of dressed up kids and big kids this year, from the photos shared in this week’s The Star, including: from Seattle First Bank, Coulee Dam, Donna Benton and Pat Goss, as cats; Connie Seaver, a ghost, Lynn Thomas and Phyllis Allstot, as dolls, and Nita Wiyrick, a dancer; and from Center Elementary, Toria Sandaine, Lori Olsen, as themselves, and Erin Black, as a rabbit. At Wright Elementary, lots of ghosts, witches pumpkins and scary ghouls posed in their finery: Cortney Jackson, Christy Ristrom, Shonita Ratcliff, John Becker, Colleen Tracy, Candy Braun, Jeanna Teach, Doug Anderson, Matty Brunnell, Jenna Keffeler, Sara Hubbard, Greg Evans, Nikki Thomas, Jake Simpson and Jami White; and in another photo, Bo Wisinger, Shannon Vyrostek, Greg Egbert, Brian WWarnecke, Tim Happ, Nikki Albert,Justin Green, Jessica Sadzewick, Jason Birdwell, Michelle Tesch, Darrel Picard, Brody Wisinger, Kym Wilson, Doug Clark, Joel Spackman, Missy Wright and Norman Stearns.

40 years ago

A committee composed of people from the Grand Coulee Dam communities will study the feasibility of a new golf course located near SpringCanyon. Committee members include: Otis Tillman, Elmer City; Bill Leon, Lee Peone and Charles Brennen, Grand Coulee; and George Hargrove and Cliff Hutshell, Coulee Dam.
