A tough race exhausted athletes in the inaugural Grand Colombian Triathlon this week. 11 hours, 10 minutes and 46 seconds later the first competitor finished. It was a huge success promotors boasted afterwards and plans for next years event are already in planning. Vedder of Portland Oregon won the Full Iron for the men and June Jenkins of Canada won for the women.

Raider Volleyball lost a close match this week, 3-2 in a spirited contest against Inchelium. Jordan Ruiz had four kills, Kristen James had two and Adrian Smith had two blocks in the loss.

 

 20 Years Ago

Nine police officers from Grand Coulee, Coulee Dam, Elmer City and the Colville Tribe broke up a party of 25-35 people, mostly juveniles, at a residence just outside of Elmer City. An ambulance transported one female who was bleeding. Police got involved when a fight broke out between an adult and a juvenile over an uninvited girl at the party. Both were arrested for assault. Most of the party goers were of Junior High age and charges have been filed with Okanogan County for investigation.

Senior Wade Taylor and Sophomore Alan Lackner were named Raiders of the Week for their outstanding play in football this week. Taylor had 11 solo tackles and a fumble recovery against Omak. Lackner completed 9 of 12 passes for over a 100 yards passing and 30 yards rushing against the Pioneers. 

40 Years Ago

The Continental Hotel is gone. It burned to the ground in a fire Sunday. It was one of the last historical landmarks of Grand Coulee, dating back to the 1930’s. It is believed that the fire started in the basement and quickly consumed the entire building. Employees did have time to remove all of the tenants from their rooms before they too were consumed.

The Coulee Dam Beavers defeated the Wilbur Redskins Friday 18-0. The Beavers scored in the first quarter on a pass from Larry Klaas to Tag Grier, a thirty yard touchdown. Fred Jiles ran for a 5 yard score moments later and Klass found Benny Logue in the fourth quarter on a three yard pass for a touchdown.

60 Years Ago

A five man team from Coulee Dam Fire Department will participate in the hose laying contest at the Inland Empire Firemen’s meeting in Spokane Sunday. Chief Stiles, Bob Milliken, Charles Peck and two other firemen make up the team.

The Grand Coulee News held a contest to see which of 16 young ladies could sell the most subscriptions to the paper. Every young lady would win a prize of some sort but who ever sold the most would get an undisclosed prize better than the rest. The participants were: Eunice Bailor, Henrietta Brown, Babe Coultas, Hazel Edson, Freda Hunich, Aileen Maple, Lorene McCaslin, Alma McCombs, Leslie McCormick, Lillian McMahon, Ruth McVay, Addie Moore, Ruth Plastino, Rachel Weaver, Lorraine Miller and Ruth Markhus.
