Sixty-Six Years Ago In this view, a workman is cleaning, by use of a power-driven buffer, the joint face of one of the sections for generating unit R-1 scrollcase, to be installed in the right powerhouse. To assure a leak-proof joint between the scrollcase sections, the contact surfaces must be clean and free of irregularities.July 14, 1948

The tenure of the Grand Coulee Dam School District's Superintendent, Dennis Chambers, came to an abrupt end Wednesday when he received notice to clear out his office. With two years remaining on his contract the $82,500 a year left on his contract was bought out.

Grand Coulee Dam Area firefighters have been busy this last week with more than 5,000 acres burned within a thirty mile radius. Each fire was caused by lightning, fireworks or unknown causes.

Only one real bid was received to develop a recreation complex on Lake Roosevelt's Crescent Bay by the National Park Service yesterday. The Colville Confederated Tribes were that one bidder.

A broken arm has not stopped 8 year old Jessica Powell. She has started publishing the "4th St. News," after breaking her arm in a fall at Spring Canyon. " I just got really bored one day" Jessica said, proudly showing off her hand wrote/drawn news reports.

The Banks Lake Golf and Country Country Club is a go. The group received word this week that the funding has been secured and construction can start immediately.

A grass fire last week totally destroyed the Grand Coulee Chamber of Commerce Fireworks stand but with the hard work of Oscar Skaar and Ross Vordahl the structure was completely rebuilt and selling fireworks in 24 hours.

Steve Storey has a big fish tale to tell. The 10 year old speared a twenty-five pound carp in Banks Lake over the weekend. Steve himself only weighs fifty-five pounds.

60 Years Ago

Montia Engvall, 16, missing since 2 p.m., Saturday, for whom a search party of 70 persons had been searching all night, returned safely home Sunday morning. Miss Engvall, a collector of wild flowers, went for a hike Sunday morning, became lost and could not find her way home in Coulee Dam before nightfall.
