Dave Slyter is the new manager at the Variety Store.

A South Carolina man was named manager at the Variety Store recently.

Owner John Sweeden selected Dave Slyter as manager of the Grand Coulee store.

The two had served together in the Sprouse Reitz chain of stores 40 years ago and have been in contact over the years.

Slyter retired from the Flying J stores over a year ago and decided after talking with Sweeden to come west to manage the store.

Slyter was born in LaGrande, Oregon and later moved to Lebanon, Oregon before handling stores in the midwest and east coast.

"Retailing is still about the same," Slyter stated. "You take good care of people and let them know that you appreciate their business."

Slyter and Sweeden managed Sprouse stores about 15 miles apart in the same store district.

The "fishing, scenery and roads to ride" his Harley were all good magnets to bring Slyter to the Grand Coulee area.
