Sixty-six Years Ago June 1 1948 - This is the west bank of the Columbia, skirting the town of Coulee Dam. During the 1948 flood extensive damage was done to the riprapped slopes on both banks for nearly a mile downstream. To protect critical areas, government forces worked around the clock for nearly two weeks, hauling replacement riprap. The discharge on this date was 535,000 cfs.

In what resembled a crime scene from television, area law enforcement closed down Pole Park for several hours Friday until a U.S. Army bomb squad could safely dispose of a foot high round of unexploded ammunition. The bomb was disposed of after four hours with no problems.

Local athlete, Mike Williams, a sophomore at Lake Roosevelt returned from the State's Special Olympics with a first place medal in the softball throw, a second in the 200-meter walk and a fifth in the 100-meter dash.

20 Years Ago

Local businessman, Jerry Kennedy, was named Agent of the Year by the Professional Insurance Agents of Washington/Alaska at the organization's annual conference Monday. It is the highest honor awarded by his professional peers.

A crime spree that started in Electric City and spread to Wilbur, Creston, Davenport and Rearden ended in Entiat, when one of the suspects was arrested. A total of five cars were stolen and numerous other smaller items by a 17-year-old Delano youth who was stopped while driving one of the stolen vehicles. The youth is being held in Chelan County Jail awaiting trail. 

John Utz was named Father of the Year for 1994. The Star Newspaper held a contest and his sons Jesse and Jamie submitted a letter and was picked as the winner.

40 Years Ago

A $75,000 claim has been filed against the Town of Elmer City by Mrs. Thelma Purcell, who allegedly suffered back injuries when the town garbage truck backed into her near her home in Elmer City.

50 Years Ago

Grand Coulee Tigers released their honor role this week. Here are the Seniors that achieved high honors: Robert Grosso, Lad Kohout, Ramon Noggles, Robert Nolan, Charles Seaton, Steve Sutton, Terry Weitzel, Sheila Auby, Cheryl Childs, Linda Gordon, Carolyn Henke, Janice Klobucher, Sandra Mattson, Pat McClain and Denise Perkins. Thirty-eight others in the Junior, Sophomore and Freshman class also received this award. 

60 Years Ago

The Carnival is coming to town.The American Legion Post of Grand Coulee and Electric City have pulled the funds together and are hosting the largest outdoor show ever to be held here. Complete with acrobats, elephants and even a lion. The show will be performed five nights straight and will start at 9:30 every night.
