Book sale gives

a boost

The PTA says its recent book fair was a success, with more than $3,000 worth of “books and bling” sold.

Through the year, the group has made several contributions to local education, incuding: books for classrooms at the middle school, Kindles for the elementary school, a rug for the grade school, a $500 donation for a sixth-grade ropes course, bringing the Pacific Science Center to Grand Coulee soon; and a production, using local students, of Blackbeards’ Pirates, a play orchestrated by the Missoula Children’s Theater for about $2,000.

The PTA will next meet May 8, at 7 p.m. at the Center Elementary Library.

Absolutely shredded

About 4,000 pounds of documents were shredded Saturday at the Rotary Club event by Strate Funeral home. The event, put on with the help of North Cascades Bank and Coulee Dam Credit Union, also brought in $394 and many food items for the Care and Share Food Bank.

Cemetery

cleanup planned

The Lions Club invites community members to join them in a two-day, May 2-3, cleanup at Spring Canyon Cemetery. Volunteers are asked to bring gloves, old knives, wheelbarrows, shovels, rakes, weed whackers and other garden tools. They are asked also to bring their own drinking water. Work begins each day a 9 a.m.

Fish released

into lake

POWER released on Saturday 150,000 Rainbow trout it had been feeding since October 2013 from the Electric City fish pens. It was estimated that the fish were running 6.6 to the pound, and the total weight of fish released was 22,650 pounds. After releasing the fish and cleaning the pens POWER is scheduled to receive another 150,000 Rainbow trout today. It is estimated that this batch will be about 100 per pound. The new batch will be ready to release about July 1.

Golf membership up

Banks Lake Golf Course officials announced this week that membership is at 77 now. That’s a sharp increase from a month ago. The Port District, which manages the course, also had a report that the fairways and greens are in good shape for golfers.

Volunteers sought

The Coulee Pioneer Museum in Electric City is looking for volunteers to work from 1-3 p.m. on May 2-3. The museum has a number of pictures to hang, officials stated.
