Electric City is asking residents to make their wishes known on the size of “accessory” buildings at a public work session, Tuesday, April 29, beginning at 7 p.m., at city hall.

Mayor Jerry Sands stated this week that if the attendance at the planning commission meeting is large enough it would be moved to the fire station.

The current size limit of “accessory” buildings in Electric City, according to its comprehensive plan, is 850 square feet.

Not enough, some residents who are interested in providing enough space to house their motorhomes, trailers, and other outdoor toys, have stated.

Two residents, Mark Payne and Mike Dennis, have appeared before the planning commission and city council on several occasions trying to get the city to move on establishing a larger building size.

“It’s time for residents to let the planning commission and city council know what they think about it,” Sands said.

Next Tuesday night residents will get the opportunity to do so.

The city has maintained, with the support of its planner, that the process is long and complicated and could cost from $8,000 to $10,000, to go through the hoops to change its comprehensive plan.

The plan also states that “accessory” buildings can only be 18 feet high.

Payne and Dennis have asked and pursued the idea of expanding the size to 1,750 square feet and the height to 30 feet.

Those will be the issues when the planning commission holds its work session next Tuesday.

Sands stated that city officials, including himself, and members of the city council, will not be at the meeting since they will be involved in any decision to make changes to the comprehensive plan.

Any changes to the plan must be approved by the city council.
