Ten Years Ago

CCH is to receive disaster money to help treat people in a major disaster, such as a bioterrorist attack. Penny Lewis, chair of the CCH safety committee, announced last week that the hospital would receive nearly $40,000.00 in grant monies for equipment and disaster training.

Coulee Dam’s Water Filtration Plant is nearing completion reported Gray and Osborn, town of Coulee Dam’s engineering firm. The slow sand filtration plant was originally budgeted for $7.19 million but the recent changes and delays have cost $90,000 more.

Mason and Marisha Holbrecht, 3 years old, found the first buttercups of spring in Delano this week in their grandfather’s back yard.

A win in the regional tournament last Wednesday kept the Raider’s post season alive but then back to back losses ended the chance. LRHS defeated Colfax 60-57 but then lost to Northwest Christian, 64-45, followed by a loss to Freeman, 73-60, to end the season.

Twenty Years Ago

  Donna Benton, Sharon Redthunder, and a dozen other woman have joined the ranks of Eleanor Roosevelt, Harriet Tubman, Susan B. Anthony, and Sarah Winnemucca. The local woman are being honored for being positive role models in the community through their profession or community involvement stated Ann Elder, coordinator for the project. The other local ladies are: Dodie Boyd, Joan Parker, Sue Bjorkland, Esther Rice, Anna Kucera, Judy Kuiper, Beverly Smick, Chris Seyler, Connie Clinkenbeard, Frieda Slattery, Gail Allen and Bonnie Femling.

Thirty Years Ago

In action last week the Grand Coulee School Board renewed football to the sports program at Junior High Level. It had been cancelled for nearly five years. This comes the same week that attorneys for the school district won a small battle in a lawsuit filed by Melvin Hart Jr. and family for his injuries he received in a Junior High football game against Omak Jr. High on Oct. 18th 1979 that left him a semi-quadriplegic. The judgment won by the district says that Hart did have the proper equipment and gear provided to him by the school. The issue will now be about “Adequate Coaching” during the unscheduled jury trial.

A free basic Walleye Clinic will be offered next week, sponsored by Rawe & Rauch. Gregg Ulrigg, an experienced fisherman, will lead the class on history, feeding habits, spawning, and all techniques needed to land a walleye. 

Forty Years Ago  

  Two accidents on the construction site of the Third Power-plant occurred monday. The first was from a falling pipe that struck Don Johnson, a worker on the site. Mr. Johnson is in good condition in a Spokane hospital. The second accident happened in the afternoon when George Cooper fell from a scroll case area and suffered extreme head injuries. He was flown by Army helicopter to a Spokane hospital where he is listed in critical condition.

Raider Wrestlers placed 3 at the State Tournament. Tom Goodwin placed 2nd at 122lbs, Rick Reamer placed 4th at 129lbs and Guy Wilson placed 4th at 129lbs. 

At the last city council meeting for Grand Coulee, stray dogs was the hot topic. The council decided to amend the current ordinance to make it mandatory that all dog owners purchase a dog tag and the dog must wear it for identification purposes.
