Cynthia “Cindy” Marie Fry-Ocampo, 67, Inchelium, Wash., passed away at Mt. Carmel Hospital, Colville, on Wednesday, Oct. 16, 2013. She had complications from rheumatoid arthritis and lupus. She was born on June 30, 1946, to Frances and James C. Fry at Nespelem, Wash . Her parents pre-deceased her. She was a member of the Colville Confederated Tribes.

She has several siblings: Carmen (David) Moorby, Ramona (Victor) LaSarte, James (Shelley) C. Fry, Jr., Frances (Jim) LeBret, and Elizabeth Fry (David A. Lindeblad). She married Michael Sargent and was very proud of her twin sons, Thomas Jack Sargent and Timothy James Sargent. She adored her grandchildren—Shawmus Sargent, Jaytee Sargent, Saffire Sargent, and Jordan George, Jade Sargent, Faith Sargent, and Timmy Sargent.

She was preceded in death by her infant, Grey Owl, while married to Alfred Nomee. She was also later married to Sonny Ocampo for several years. She had a special relationship with her nieces and nephews: Aaron Allison, Fawn Allison, James Moorby, Simon Moorby, Jason Fry, Monkaki LaSarte, Sarah LaSarte, Jason Tevlin, Dion Fry, Ira Pakootas, Matthew LeBret, and Mary Lindeblad-Fry.

She attended St. Mary’s Mission, Omak, and Holy Names Academy, Spokane, Wash. She graduated from Gonzaga University in 1976 in Education and received a Master’s degree in Education from Eastern Washington University. She worked for United Indian of All Tribes in Seattle, Wash.,as the Director of Head Start for a five-state region. She started the Head Start Program in Inchelium. She was the superintendent and principal of Paschal Sherman Indian School for several years. Before and during college, she participated in many Native American organizations, usually in a leadership role. She enjoyed collecting Native American memorabilia and crafts and created earrings and other jewelry. She was a long-time resident of the Twin Lakes community in her final years. She believed in Native American religion. Her favorite family dog was Ginger.

The rosary and wake were held on October 20, 2013 at 7 p.m. at St. Michael’s Hall, Inchelium, and the funeral Mass was held on October 21, 2013, at 10 a.m. at St. Michael’s Church, Inchelium. Fr. Jake Morton, S.J., officiated. Internment was at the Hall Creek Cemetery, Inchelium.
