Ten Years Ago

Skateboarders banned from business district in a new law passed by Coulee Dam Council. The new ordinance states that its unlawful to ride on any street, alley, sidewalk, park or publicly owned parking lots in the central business district of the town.

Raider football wins league opener against Liberty Bell 28-6. Coach Matt Bona pointed out the excellent play of the defensive backs as the key to victory.                                                                                                                   Jamie Williams, Zach Thiefault, Jarred Erickson and Neil Johnson all had remarkable games on defense. Spusman Wilder had 206 yards on the ground, including a 31-yard touchdown run.

            

Twenty Years Ago

Local drive in, Rock’n Robin, brought “Happy Days” to the Coulee again this week. The event was created by owner Joan Tscheulin and was supported by nearly every merchant in town. Businesses dressed in 1950s attire and had sales to commemorate the event. At the drive in customers participated in a root beer chug, limbo competition and Hula Hoop tournament.


Dusty Miley, 14, scored big on his first-ever elk. He shot the 5x6 bull with one shot from his 7mm rifle at 75 yards.

Controversy started at the Raider football game at Chelan as soon as the players stepped on the field. Officials claimed there was not enough contrast between the maroon Raiders uniform and Chelan’s red. Athletic Director John Adkins took full responsibility for the mishap, stating the Raiders only had 15 white jerseys available. LR was forced to pull practice jerseys of gold and blue over their uniforms to play the game. Raiders lost the game 20-14.

Thirty Years Ago

 USBR has opened bids for a new oil/water separator at Grand Coulee Dam. The contract calls for removing the old system and installing the new.

Kenneth and Irene Ehlers will celebrate their 35th wedding anniversary this week at the Zion Lutheran Church in Grand Coulee. Arrangements are being made by their daughters and son, Vickie Jess, Diane Jaber, Cheryl Ehlers, Debbie Ehlers and Joe Ehlers.

The Pee Wee Bowling League wanted to announce its high games for the week. Boys’ Chad Kiser with 118 and girls’ Stephanie Anderson with a score of 66. 

Forty Years Ago  

Marine Pvt. Paul O. Tillman graduated from basic training at the Marine Corps Recruit Depot in San Diego. Paul is the son of Mr. and Mrs. James Tillman.

A part of the Untied States Navy Band will give a concert Friday at the Lake Roosevelt gym. The band will play a number of specials numbers and the public is invited.

Fifty Years Ago

  Mrs. Roy (Myrtle) Rinker won sixth place in the Washington Barrel Racing Association’s top ten standings. She also won the barrel racing championship of the Girls Northwest Rodeo Association.

Mr. and Mrs. Paul McKay returned home to find hunters had shot up their home. There were holes in their windows and their brand-new aluminum siding. Game wardens believe that the hunters probably mistook the green siding as foliage, but that is no excuse.

Grand Coulee Tigers edged Coulee Dam Beavers in the final ten seconds of friday nights football game. Rick McClain intercepted and Beaver pass by Pat Zlateff and scampered 20 yards for the winning score.

Wright Chevrolet of Grand Coulee announced the delivery of five new kinds of cars. A Corvair Monza Club Coupe, Corvette Sting Ray Sport Coupe, Chevy Nova II 4 Door Sedan, Chevelle Malibu Sport Coupe and Chevy Impala Sport Coupe. All will be on display this week.

Sixty Years Ago

Coulee Dam Coffee Shop was sold by Brooks Boyd to a former owner C.D. Newland. Newland plans on putting in new equipment, new booths, new curio cases and new linoleum. Newland is also the owner operator of The Green Hut.

Monday morning the home of Clarence H. Fletcher and family was destroyed by fire in Lone Pine. The only thing saved was the clothes on his and his families back.  The Fletchers where in the shed preparing chickens for their locker when the blaze broke out. It is unknown what started the fire.

Mayor Jack Carlson drew out the winning tickets at a recent Safeway Store drawing, while store manager Al Geraud and Chet Brinkerhoff looked on. Ruth Georgie won the grand prize, a Norge deep freeze unit. Tommie Greer and Leonard Eagle also took home grocery store orders of $25 and $10 respectively.

This week playing at The Roosevelt Theater “ Shane” starring Jack Palance, Alan Ladd, Van Heflin and Jean Arthur. Playing at the Coulee Dam Theater “ The Story of Three Loves” with Pier Angeli, Ethel Barrymore and Kirk Douglas.including a 31 yard touchdown run.

Ricky Manley, 23, died last week after falling from the bed of a moving pickup truck on Roosevelt Drive. The lifelong resident of Grand Coulee had attended Lake Roosevelt High School and worked as a logger, carpenter and fireman with Mount Tolman Fire Center.

Grand Coulee Dam Chamber of Commerce is getting prepared for its Moonlight Madness Halloween Celebration and is challenging all business to adopt-a-pole and decorate it with a scarecrow. Prizes will be given out for the best designs.

Dale Carriere and Cindy Thiefault where united in marriage recently in a western themed wedding. The bride and her party came in on buck board drawn by horses to the theme of “Bonanza.”

  Herbert Horton was presented with a Special Achievement Award by J.P. Green, Acting Operations Manager of Grand Coulee Dam. This was in recognition of Horton’s outstanding leadership, technical knowledge, commitment to the objectives and exemplary manner in which he performed his duties as Foreman III Electrician and Lineman since August of 1971.
