Science teams take prizes in big competition

Three science teams from Lake Roosevelt High School competed in the Imagine Tomorrow event at Washington State University in Pullman last weekend, bringing home cash and kudos for a big effort from a small school.
In its sixth year, the competition asks high school teams from around the Pacific Northwest in four broad categories.
LRHS competed in three categories this year, with each category having more than 40 teams, most from the west side of the state in large school districts with special science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) programs, or from private schools from the Seattle area, advisor and LR science teacher Ralph Rise noted.
“When you’re competing against all the I-5 Corridor schools, we did really well,” Rise said.
LR students presented three projects:
• Our Native Table – entered in the Behavior category,
• Scrap Power 2, in Technology, and
• Green Hydro, in Design.
Scrap Power 2, with Abe Batten, Natasha French, and Brady Black, took fourth place.

Those awards add to LR’s other accomplishments over six years at the competition, including three first place awards, two forth place awards, two Inspiration awards, one Global Impact award, and one Advisors Favorite Award.
“We want to especially thank Pacific Aquaculture for going above and beyond to help with the Green Hydro project,” Rise noted.
That project looked at ways to reduce total disolved gases in water that spills over Grand Coulee Dam, as has been happening this week.
On the Green Hydro team were Kodie Horn, James Monaghan, Harlie Dice, Mikel Friedlander, Justus DeWinkler.
The fourth-place award for Scrap Power 2 earned $250 for each student team member and $1,000 for the school.
