The Raider girls’ tennis squad posted back-to-back wins last week, defeating Wilbur-Creston April 8 and Davenport April 13.

Lake Roosevelt’s boys beat Wilbur-Creston, but fell to Davenport.

In both cases, the matches were the first against W-C and the Gorillas in Head Coach Steve Archer’s memory.

Holly Carriere was determined to win and did so against Rhea Castrodale 4-6, 6-2, 7-5. Emily Williams won by a deceptively large margin as Coach Archer elaborates, “Emily’s match was closer than the score indicated,” he said, “but Emily is a fighter; she hustles all the time and it was a good win for her” at 6-1, 6-2.

In doubles action, the freshmen duo of Tanya Ang and Areielle White defeated Ireland Corrigan and Janae Dasef 7-6 (7-3), 6-1.

“After a close first set, which they won in a tiebreaker (7-3),” Archer noted, “they got the momentum in the second set and never looked back, winning it at 6-1. They came off the court very pleased with themselves.”

The Raider boys won their singles matches against the Wildcats. Daniel Campobasso defeated Jacob Paunovich 7-6 (7-4), 6-2. Brandon Smith held off Matt Christman in the second set to win 6-2, 7-5. The two teamed up to take on W-C’s doubles team of Andrew Peterson and Mason Copeland. In a single set match, Smith and Campobasso lost the close match 8-6.

On Saturday, the Raider girls again put on a show, beating Davenport 4-1 and improving their standing in the league.

In singles action, Emily Williams took care of business and defeated Kayla Holden 6-3, 6-0. Lyric Witten also won her match against Qiana Casch by the same score. In doubles action, White and Ang defeated Sarah Guhlke and Aslyn Morris 6-4, 6-2.

The Raider boys had a difficult time in singles matches, losing both.

“The two top boys from Davenport were very good, having competed at the state level last year,” Archer noted.

Campobasso lost to Max Mielke 6-0, 6-0. Brandon Smith lost to Jared Regan 6-0, 6-0.

When they teamed up for doubles, the boys picked up their win for the day, defeating Rick Newmeyer and Drake Elwood 6-4, 6-0.

The Raiders headed to White Swan last night for a Central Washington B League match against the Cougars. They will host Okanogan on Thursday at LRHS starting at 4:30 p.m., then take on league-leading Pateros Friday, there, at 4:30 p.m.
