More candidate information needed

Letters to the Editor

As a longtime resident and business person in the coulee area who has found himself more involved with the workings of the local city councils over the past few years, I would like to express my concern to my fellow voters about the upcoming elections for local officials.

It would seem that we need, as our area grows, a more adequate way of obtaining information from the candidates, information that would give us a more complete understanding of their positions on local issues, some of their projected solutions and some means of measuring their success.

I would like to see more active campaigning than just a simple mailer, or short article in the local paper.

Perhaps a public meeting where candidates present their platform, perhaps even a debate over some issues. An opportunity for the voters to actually “know” the candidates and cast their votes based on facts.

I am sure that would also increase the actual voter involvement in local government — a true grass roots effort. The more information we have, the more informed we are in making our decisions, the better we will all be served. After all, the local government is our government — established to serve the people. All of us.

I would think the standing local governments would all support this effort — after all, the better informed the voters, the more effective, the more support there will be for local improvements.
