Plenty of opportunity to honor veterans

It’s a time to honor veterans.

A number of special events are scheduled throughout the week to honor the area’s veterans, both in schools and in other ways.

The Grand Coulee Dam Middle School will hold its annual Veteran’s Day celebration at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, Nov. 8.

Legion Post 157 plans to participate in the festivities, which include a slide show featuring local vets.

Students from Sandy Hood’s class wrote to veterans encouraging them to attend the event, scheduled for the school gym. Posters are made honoring individual vets, and certificates of appreciation for their service will be presented.

Post 157 will also participate in a special veteran celebration at Lake Roosevelt High School at 10:30 a.m. Friday, Nov. 9.

The high school choir will sing the national anthem and a musical tribute to veterans, and veterans will post the colors. Navy Capt. Richard Black, retired, will emcee the program, which will explain the folding of the flag and the bugle tune “Taps” to students.

At Nespelem School, American Legion Post 114 will participate in a veteran’s celebration in the gym at 1:30 p.m. Veterans are invited. The post’s auxiliary will also take part. Students at the school will also participate.

Friday evening, veterans will gather at the Nespelem Community Center at 7 p.m. for a grand entry, and then will have two grand entries on Saturday, one at 1 p.m. and the other at 7 p.m. All veterans are asked to participate.

On Sunday, the annual veterans assembly will be at the Colville Indian Agency at 10 a.m ., followed by a noon dinner at the Nez Perce Long House.

Legion Post 157 will host their annual breakfast Saturday, Nov. 10, at the Vet’s Center in Electric City, from 6:30 to 11 a.m. The breakfast features all the traditional breakfast items.

Banks and state and federal offices will be closed on Monday, Nov 12, in observance of Veteran’s Day.

A special section featuring pictures of many local veterans is included with this week’s Star.
