The Raiders recorded their first victory of the 2012 season in Friday night’s homecoming win over the Manson Trojans, 45-27.

With the win, the Raiders are tied with White Swan for fourth in the Central Washington 2B League with a one-win, one-loss league record.

Manson did not roll over for the Raiders. They returned the opening kickoff for a touchdown and gained the lead three times in the first half. Led by a speedy running back and a solid quarterback, the Trojans stayed with the Raiders and did try to mount a comeback in the second half.

That was stymied by a Ben Samuels interception and two fumbles.

“We won the turnover battle, which was big for us,” Heach Raider Coach Steve Files said, “and controlled the ball on offense.”

The Raider offense rushed for 381 yards, with Justus DeWinkler and Kodie Horn each having 100-yard games (DeWinkler 128, Horn 108).

“The offensive line had by far their best game of the season,” Files said. “Andrew McClure, Trey Nicholson, Octavio Alejandre, Sean Waters, and Michael Rounds. We ended up with 381 yards rushing and our big guys were the key to that success.”

Austin Rosenbaum, in his first start since being injured against Seattle Lutheran, threw a 38-yard touchdown pass to Desmond House.

Rosenbaum also scored two more Raider touchdowns — on a three-yard run in the first quarter, and on a 40-yard run in the second for the lead going into halftime. DeWinkler scored three touchdowns, two on offense and one on special teams. In the first half, DeWinkler scored on a 35-yard run from scrimmage and on a 75-yard kickoff return. In the second half DeWinkler punched in the game-ending score from two yards out. Kyle Holt also recorded a touchdown for the Raiders in the third quarter off a 45-yard run from scrimmage.

Files saw great improvement in Raider defense over the Kittitas game.

“We gave up a few big plays, but for the most part we played our assignments, pursued, tackled with authority, and forced four turnovers,” he said.

House and Samuels had interceptions, while DeWinkler and Trey Nicolson recovered fumbles.

Waters led the team with seven tackles against the Trojans.

The Raiders travel to Oroville Friday for a 7 p.m. game against the second-place Hornets, who snatched a one-point win from Liberty Bell last week.
