NRCS offers emergency assistance to land owners for storm damage

SPOKANE, WA, (Aug 9, 2012) –Today, USDA’s Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) announced the availability of emergeng for damage to forested lands resulting from a microburst storm of emergency funding for damage to forested lands resulting from a microburst storm on July 20, 2012.

The storm, which took place in Ferry County, produced winds in excess of 100 miles per hour. This resulted in extensive property damage, power disruption and forestland destruction. The County was declared an emergency disaster area by Ferry County Commissioners and Governor Chris Gregoire.

NRCS has secured funding to assist landowners in treating forest slash created by the windstorm through the Environmental Quality Incentives Program (EQIP) Storm Damage Initiative. Under the EQIP Storm Damage Initiative contracts, NRCS provides financial payments and technical assistance to help producers implement conservation practices associated with the windstorm. The practices offered are forest slash disposal and wildlife habitat management.

The sign up period for this emergency initiative ends August 15,2012.
