Ten Years Ago

“Too much water and not enough buyers,”said Bonneville Power Administration Spokesperson Mike Hanson. The laws of supply and demand, plus a fire north of Los Angeles led to the rare occasion last weekend when water flowed over the front of Grand Coulee Dam.

Grand Coulee Dam set a new precedent recently when it generated more megawatts of energy in and hour than ever before. Monday between noon and 1 p.m. 5,969 megawatts of electricity per hour were generated at Grand Coulee Dam, said Bureau of Reclamation Public Affairs Officer Craig Sprankle.

A fee soon awaits Electric City residents who refuse to resolve cleanup problems outside their house or to stop their dogs from barking incessantly.

A man who lives in Grand Coulee and works for the Grant County Sheriff’s Office got a big promotion last week that significantly increases his responsibilities. On June 6, John Dazell was promoted to third chief deputy of Grant County, a position recently created. Sheriff Mike Shay said Dazell’s new duties include investigating traffic fatalities, murders and all other major crimes.

Years Ago

The LRHS class of 1992 received diplomas before a packed and swelling audience in the school gym last Friday evening. Ninety-two seniors and three foreign exchange students took part in the school’s 21st commencement. Valedictorian was Amy Alling and Charles Short was salutatorian. Roni Gross and Benjie Dupris were class speakers.

Employees, retirees and friends of the USBR are invited to a ceremony on June 17 to celebrate the Reclamation’s 90th anniversary.

Thirty Years Ago

The GCD School District held a reception June 7 honoring retirees. They included Pete Epperson, Edgar Isbell, Josie Esau, Cliff Selle, Joyce Behrens and Myra Dechenne.

The GCD Coors fast-pitch team rolled by Davenport to up their record 25-0. Kary Byam had seven for eight hits while John Edmonson went six for eight.

Forty Years Ago

Lance Corporal Fordean K. Palmanteer, son of Mr. and Mrs. Norris Palmanteer of Grand Coulee was promoted to his recent grade while serving with the Marine Detachment on the USS Chicago.

Fifty Years Ago

Mr. and Mrs. Russell George were received into the membership of the Nespelem Methodist Church at the morning services Sunday.

Last week members of Rex Grange spent several days working at the hall. A new set of concrete steps at the front door are the result of their work.

Sixty Years Ago

Nespelem High School held commencement exercises. Members of the class were Alvina Broncheau, June Kinkaid, Shirley Knapp, Ray Courville, Floyd Whyatt, John Bell, Fred Gendron, Darrell Knapp, Michael Somday, and James Somday Jr.

A big beautiful neon sign has been installed on the new city light building reading“City of Grand Coulee.”The $50,000 structure is rapidly nearing completion and will give the city one of the most modern municipal buildings in the state.
