Christmas lights discussed

It appears that the community Christmas lights may go up this year.

Coulee Dam Councilmember Ben Alling said Wednesday night that he had attended Electric City’s Hotel/Motel tax committee meeting, where it was suggested that the community Yule lights be divided between the three municipalities and put up by their respective public works departments.

The Coulee Dam Town Council agreed that it was a good idea.

The lights include the leaping deer, a Jack in the box, bears in a snowball fight, angel figures and a host of other light subjects.

Electric City Mayor Jerry Sands said he would encourage the towns to put in LED bulbs to cut down on the cost of electricity.

“We could pay for the replacement cost with the energy we save,” he said. “It would take about four years.” Electric City has done this with the lights it has put up.

Sands said he would work to get Grand Coulee to participate in the plan.

The lights have been put up in the past by volunteers.

Electric City has put up a few of the light figures the past few years using city workers to do the work.
