Thanks for keeping the new-school dream alive

Letters to the Editor

We would like to thank Superintendent Dennis Carlson, along with past superintendents, and School Board Members past and present, for their undaunted efforts to secure funding for new school facilities. Because of your continued commitment, and your refusal to accept defeat, you have been successful in fulfilling a dream for our community.

The dream of new schools in the Grand Coulee Dam School District began nearly 20 years ago. When I was teaching, I was on several committees throughout the years, under the leadership of a variety of superintendents, working on the preliminary aspects of securing funding for new facilities. Obtaining funding for new schools is a very long, arduous process for any school district, and with our unique situation, it is even more complicated. It has taken years of gathering information, filling out mountains of paperwork, doing countless demographic studies, needs assessments and justifications, along with continuing to be the squeaky wheel in Olympia and Washington, D.C. But, because the dream was never extinguished, all of that hard work has paid off for the children of our community.

Viewing the architect’s drawings on the Design West website is awesome! To see the dream becoming a reality, even if it’s only on paper at this point, is so exciting! We are thrilled for our grandkids, knowing that they will be able to attend beautiful, modern, safe schools, which will make their educational experience much more enjoyable, meaningful, and exciting. The students of the Grand Coulee Dam School District will be able to get the education that they deserve. This is a huge advantage in preparing our children for the opportunities and challenges of the 21st Century.

Of course, we realize that new school buildings will not solve all the problems facing our school district, or any school district, but is a huge step in the right direction. Having a beautiful new facility, with state-of-the-art classrooms, computer labs, and science labs, with efficient heating and air-conditioning systems, proper lighting, a cafeteria for all students, along with being able to use personnel and facilities more efficiently, will help tremendously. Just as our new hospital has brought much pride and enrichment to our entire community, new school facilities will do the same. They will improve the image of our schools, and give students, faculty, parents, and our entire community a renewed sense of pride and enthusiasm about education.

Again, thank you for keeping the dream alive, and ultimately turning the dream into a reality.

Ron and Sue Bjorklund
