Ten Years Ago

Volksmarching enthusiasts from all over the state came to the Grand Coulee Dam area last weekend to take in two grueling walks and the scenery.

A memorial fund to honor a former Grand Coulee Dam school district employee could give district students new software. Lake Roosevelt alumnus Dean Pachosa, who works at Microsoft, said he has been working with the school district to set up the Linda Snyder Memorial Technology Fund.

Electric City residents may soon face similar standards as Grand Coulee citizens, now that their town council has begun researching a nuisance ordinance.

Milan Barry, age 16, was presented his Eagle Scout Award April 17, at a National BSA Eagle Court Board of Review on Dec. 27, 2001. Eagle is the highest rank a Boy Scout can earn.

Go to jail!!! The sheriff and deputies will be serving warrants and hauling people to jail; watch for it throughout Grand Coulee starting Thursday. $5.00 is all it costs to get them arrested and $5.00 bribery fee to be set free.

Twenty Years Ago

Standing on the steps of the Capitol, inspecting the Declaration of Independence, and looking over the Potomic River from George Washington’s own Mt. Vernon have a way of inspiring patriotism as no history lesson learned in a classroom 3,000 miles away ever did. For 28 students from the Grand Coulee and Keller areas who traveled to Washington, D.C., over spring break, American history leapt out of a textbook into real events and real edifices.

In the annual Keep Washington Green Poster Contest sponsored by the Superintendent of Public Instruction, Tysha Fry and Jaimi Smith won third place at the county level. Their posters will be forwarded to state competition. Victoria Running Hawk took second place.

Thirty Years Ago

Word has been received that Valerie K. Morgan has been awarded a $2,000 scholarship renewable for up to four years of undergraduate study at Gonzaga University. This scholarship was made possible by Valerie being selected as a finalist by the National Merit Scholarship Corporation.

Sandra Russell, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Carl Russell of Electric City won 2nd place in a group of 41 contestants at Future Business Leaders of America State Contest. She was also in the top 10 in the Job Interview category. The contest was held at Pasco.

Movie at Village Cinema - TAPS and starting May 7 Clash of the Titans.

Forty Years Ago

Mr. and Mrs. Bob Gemmell of Pendleton, Ore., pioneer merchants on old B Street in Grand Coulee, spent several days visiting at the home of Mr. And Mrs. Lee Cottrell at Elmer City.

U.S. Air Force Lt. (j.g. Jim Elliott, son of Mr. and Mrs. James Elliott, Coulee Dam, has been home on leave from Moffett Field, Calif. He left last weekend for Hawaii and overseas duty.

Fifty Years Ago

John E. Mills Jr. of Nespelem and Jennie May Watson of Creston were united in marriage at the Methodist Church in Grand Coulee Friday night. Rev. James Lane officiated.

Among those touring with the 80 voice E.W.S. Symphonic Choir from this area are Liz Glick, Carolyn Corsmo, Roxy Koester and Larry Morley. They are on a four-day trip through eight central Washington cities.

Sixty Years Ago

Sean Rice has been elected as president for next year of the folk dancing club, “Bleitz and Bleiking”, at Washington State College, where he is a student. Besides being interested in folk dancing, Rice is active in the rifle team and sports. He is the son of Mrs. Esther Rice, mathematics teacher in Coulee Dam High School.

The Lady Lions met Monday evening at the home of Mrs. Jack Hilson. Guests were Mrs. Al Dube of Spokane, formerly a member of the club at Grand Coulee Dam, and Mrs. Bob Hilson.
