Moratorium on medical marijuana extended

Electric City’s council extended its moratorium on the establishment of medical marijuana collective gardens for another six months at its meeting last week. The current moratorium would have run out April 30.

Health District active

Grant County Health District reported on its activities in the area last year. The Health District maintained a life jacket loaner station at Steamboat Rock State Park, participated with Coulee Medical Center in the Region 7 Healthcare Coalition and distributed bike helmets in a safety program at Electric City’s Earth Day celebration.

The Health District report stated that the whooping cough epidemic has been downgraded. Last year there were 56 cases in the county and 580 people who came in contact with those infected.

Sheriff in town

Grant County Sheriff Tom Jones will be at Pepperjack’s Restaurant, Monday, May 7, at 7 p.m., to visit with people about their public safety concerns. The public is invited.

Health District at Earth Day

As part of its “safe kids” program the Grant County Health District was on hand last Saturday for Electric City’s Earth Day observance. Officials were on hand fitting helmets and educating children to always wear a helmet when riding their bicycles.

Spencer recognized

Lake Roosevelt senior Shundina Spencer was recognized at Monday’s school board meeting for completing 3,444 hours of community service during her high school career. This year’s seniors, 62 of them, completed 7,745 hours of community service or at minimum wage, would have earned over $70,000.

School district has clean audit

Dwight Remmick from the Educational Service District told school board members that the district had a clean audit by state auditors and it was through hard and careful work by staff members. Remmick along with school officials attended the audit exit meeting.

Retention policy to be researched

The school board instructed Superintendent Dennis Carlson to research and prepare a retention policy for the district and present it at the school board meeting in May.

Money given for trip

Two organizations, the Grand Coulee Dam PTA and the JOM, together gave nearly $1,000 to the Middle School and Nespelem sixth grade Tall Timbers trip to Leavenworth.

Kindergarten students getting ready

Center Elementary Principal Sue Hinton told school board members that 47 kindergarten students have already registered for next year. She said that at this stage of the year that this typically represents about two-thirds of those expected to attend school this fall.

Mini Bloomsday

Friday at Center

Friday, students at Center Elementary School, will take part in the school’s annual “Mini-Bloomsday” run. The event will begin at 1:30 p.m.
