Last week at the Grand Coulee Dam Middle School’s GCD Home Meet, eighth-grader Sydney Matheson threw for a 4-foot personal record in the shot put, which placed her at number one in the state for middle school girls.

Matheson’s throw of 36 feet, 9 inches edged out Angel Nkwonta from Lincoln Middle School in Pullman by just one inch for first place in the athletic.net Washington State performance list at 6 pounds.

Matheson was ecstatic just hear how far her throw had gone, let alone that she was the best in the state.

Tomorrow at Bridgeport, Matheson will try to better her mark to keep first place for a second straight week.

(Full disclosure: the writer is her coach.)
