Katelyn Schilling puts the shot.

The Raider girls finished one point behind 2A Medical Lake to place fourth at the Quincy Invitational, sponsored by Clifton Larson Allen at Quincy High School Saturday.

Leading the way was Kim Barry, who, for the second week in a row, swept the long distance races.

In the 3200-meter race, Barry jumped out ahead early and then built a 40-second lead on the second-place runner. By the last lap, Barry had lapped a third of the other runners.

Her first-place time of 11 minutes, 58.8 seconds is a season PR of 13 seconds.

Barry's next race was the 1600, where Haley Berryman of Ephrata challenged Barry every step of the way. Neither girl ever held more than a five-meter lead the entire race. It came down to the last 100 where Barry and Berryman sprinted with everything that was left, staying shoulder to shoulder until the finish where Barry edged out Berryman by just 0.26 seconds.

Barry's first-place time in the 1600 was a season PR of 20 seconds; her time was 5:25.63.

Barry's third first-place finish came in the 800, where she was again challenged by Bree Holloway of Chelan for most of the race. Unlike in the 1600, Holloway did not have as much left to burn in the last 100 as Barry took the gold in 2:28.34. In between races, Barry took home a third-place medal in the pole vault, clearing the bar at 8 feet even.

Cheyenne Kelly-Marconi placed sixth in three events: the 300 low hurdles (53.45), the long jump (14-6.5), and the triple jump (31-11).

Katelynn Schilling is still surprising other schools’ upperclassmen in the shot put. Her throw of 30 feet, 8.5 inches took home the third-place medal and finished 19 places ahead of the next freshman in the field of 40.

In her other event, Schilling PRed by two inches in the discus with a throw of 72-7.

Miranda Salas remained steady in the javelin, throwing over 90 feet for the third time this season and taking home eighth place with the throw of 90-9.

Two Raider boys placed Saturday: Nick Gleason and Jesse Adkins. Gleason ran a swift 100, finishing eighth in 12.23 seconds. In the 200 Gleason ran for a career PR of 24.75 seconds. Due to the amount of competion, this fast time was good for only 11th place.

At the pole vault, Gleason tied his PR with a vault of 9 feet.

Jesse Adkins took seventh in both hurdle races. His times were 16.73 seconds in the 110 and 42.81 in the 300 high hurdles.

Adkins took home a third ribbon over at the triple jump. His leap of 40 feet, 1.25 inches placed him fourth.

Other Raiders who set PRs at Quincy include Zachary Erickson in the 1600 in 6:38, an improvement of 10 seconds.

Octavio Alejandre improved his javelin mark by 10 inches by throwing 82-11.

Mary Ann Matheson set PRs in all three of her events. The 800 was a season PR of 3:14.38, an improvement of 0.04 seconds. Her 1600 time of 6:49.71 is an improvement of 3.06 seconds, and in the 3200 Matheson sliced off 39 seconds to 14:03.76.

Kim Barry pumps through the 1600.

“It was an exciting day with great competition that pushed our athletes,” Head Coach Lori Adkins said. “Nearly all gained a PR in at least one event.”

The Raiders competed last night in Mansfield at the Iceberg Invitational against strictly B schools from the Central Washington 1B and 2B Leagues.

On Friday they will travel to Peshastin for the John Rieke Invitational, hosted by Cascade High School. This meet will feature a field consisting of almost all the CWL 2B schools, along with five of the six Caribou Trail League schools. Epharta and Granite Falls will be the 2A schools in attendence.

Field events will start at 3:30 p.m. with the track events following at 4:30 p.m.
