Raiders rackets rained out

With the wet weather, the Raider tennis squad was only able to play one of three matches scheduled for last week, and that match was a makeup for a previous weather cancellation.

At Omak March 26, the Pioneers roughed up the Raiders on the whole. The only win for the Raiders came in boys’ singles action as Hayden Rodrigues defeated Cody Smith in convincing form, 8-1.

Phoenix Shephard came back from a deficit to force a tie breaker, but lost to Greg Sklar 9-8, (7-0).

Kayne Oberg dropped his match to Matt Pearce 8-0.

In doubles action, the boys came close making the duos of Omak work for their wins. Brandin Smith and Daniel Campobosso lost to Seth Law and Morgan O’Dell 8-5. Nick Rice and Trevor Toler lost to Caleb Riggle and Crady Layton 8-6.

For the Lady Raiders, it was, by the score book, another rout, but Head Coach Steve Archer saw some promising things last Monday.

“The girls did improve, even though they didn’t win,” he said, “but they are playing with more and more confidence.”

In girls’ singles action, Meagan Bellamy continues to improve as she stayed in her match against Analise Goodall before dropping in a 8-4 decision. Emily Williams lost to Maddy Sandoval 8-3 and Hillary Carriere dropped her match to Shaylyn Goodall 8-0.

In doubles, Nichole Baker and Holly Jo Carriere stayed with Taty Martinez and Erie LaGrou until the very end.

“Holly Jo and Nicole were knotted up at 6-6 and were unable to put it away in the end,” Archer said.

Regine Wilson and Hayley Seylor lost to Nicole Statler and Danielle Berntsen, 8-3.

Cancelled home league matches against Liberty Bell and Oroville will be made up at a later date.

Tennis has this week off and will return to action on Monday at Wilson Creek with matches starting at 4:30 p.m.
