Raider track still shifting

Raider track is still shifting people around to find the best competitive mix.

At Cashmere last Friday, for instance, speedster Nick Gleason threw shot put and distance man Oscar Pakootas tried his hand at the 100-meter dash.

Even with the mix-and-match approach, many Raiders hit personal records, with both teams placing. The boys took fifth, while the girls finished 4th.

Kim Barry continued as a force for the Lady Raiders, winning the 800 in two minutes, 35 seconds, the 1600 (5:54), and the 3200 (12:37). In the pole vault, she stayed at 7 feet 6 inches, which earned her fourth in that event.

Cheyenne Kelly-Marconi had a stellar day placing in all four of her events and surpassing two personal bests. Marconi's two career PRs came in the 100 hurdles and triple jump. Her ran the hurdles in 19.09, nearly two seconds faster than her previous mark, placing her eighth at the meet. Marconi’s 30 feet 6 inches in the triple jump was good for second place at Cashmere and was 5 inches better than her previous PR. Marconi finished fourth in the 300 hurdles, and, with a jump of 13 feet 5.75 inches, took home fifth in the long jump.

In girls’ shot put, freshman Katelynn Schilling placed second with a throw of 28 feet 4 inches.

Senior Miranda Salas threw a PR in the javelin taking home third. The throw of 90 feet 6 inches was 2 feet farther than Salas's league competitor from Entiat, Yumiko Sanford, who threw 88 feet 3 inches for a fourth-place finish.

Nick Gleason's shot put of 32-5.5 was good enough to place eighth. In the 100 he ran a 12.20 to take fourth, and in the 200 Gleason took home third with a time of 25.32.

Jesse Adkins placed in two events. He won fourth place in the 400 with a time of 56.98 and earned third place in the triple jump at 40-2.

Sean Waters was not impressed by the other competitors, winning the shot (38-1) and earning a third place in the discus (104-11).

Raider Track did not take spring break off, as they are competing this Saturday at the 84th annual Davis Invitational at Davis High School in Yakima. Events start at 10 a.m. The prestigious meet will feature primarily Big Nine and Central Washington Athletic Conference schools. This is another meet where only the top two Raiders in each event will get to compete.
