  • Raider Roundup

    Oct 29, 2025

LR ends soccer in postseason game The Liberty Bell Mountain Lions upset the Lake Roosevelt Raiders on their home field Saturday in the first game of the 2025 CWB Girls Soccer Tournament. Lake Roosevelt (9-6) beat Liberty Bell (3-9-2) in their two earlier encounters this season, stopping them 2-0 last time, but Saturday the Lions clawed the Raiders off, 4-1. The loss ends the strongest season Lake Roosevelt's soccer program has had since its 2016 inception, which they ended with a 4-11 record in...

  • Ferguson, Kotek must focus on solutions, not uncorking more litigation

    Don C. Brunell|Oct 22, 2025

Recently, governors Bob Ferguson (Washington) and Tina Kotek (Oregon) asked the federal court to lift a stay (hold) on litigation primarily directed at tearing down the four lower Snake River dams. President Trump’s executive order stopped federal agencies from taking part in litigation. It halted “behind the scenes” efforts to spend billions to tear down Ice Harbor, Lower Monumental, Little Goose and Lower Granite dams. Lately, breaching proponents switched their tactics to federal dam operations that curtail hydroelectric production and incre...

  • Raiders lose at homecoming game

    Scott Hunter|Oct 22, 2025

The outcome of the game with Liberty Bell was even more lopsided than the numbers of players on each football team, but not much. The Mountain Lions mauled the Raiders 70-46 in only the second home game of a "weird" season for the Raiders, and their second to last game of the year. For the Lake Roosevelt team, the challenging schedule comes in part from decisions to play 8-man ball when too few players on either team were eligible. Out of a total official roster of 21, Raiders in the game often...

    Scott Hunter|Jun 11, 2025

Nearly four dozen young adults walked across the stage and out the door Saturday after graduating from Lake Roosevelt High School having already seen some hard reality and ready to take life on. "We are proof that hard times create strong people," is the official motto of the class of 2025. They started high school in 2021 in the midst of the Covid 19 pandemic with all its health and cultural complications, steeped in a time that would teach them about the fragility of human life. In the middle...

  • Community shred day coming up

    Apr 9, 2025

It only happens about every other year, but Community Shred Day is almost upon us. The local Rotary Club started organizing the event several years ago to bring in a paper shredding truck to get that job done right after tax-filing time means people have old records they no longer need but would like to shred, not just toss in the garbage. This year, the local Lions Club is joining in the effort, too. April 26 will be the day this year that people can head to North Dam Park by the Gerkhe Windmills to have their documents shredded, for free....

Saturday, Dec. 21 was Trees of Sharing gift delivery day. Four “elf” teams made the rounds, taking gifts to 90 children in 41 families in the Coulee that misty morning. In addition to the delivery elves, many others contributed to the success of this year’s project, keeping the tradition going for more than 40 years. Included are those who made and filled out a gift tag for each eligible child whose name was submitted in November; selected tags from the trees, shopped, wrapped and returned gifts to one of the tree locations by mid-D...

  • Strange game, season

    Scott Hunter|Dec 18, 2024

Most of the boys' basketball game with Liberty Bell Friday night seemed to be going according to norms. Tight competition: it ended regular play going into overtime 46-46. And that is where the Mountain Lions apparently decided they would score no more. They kept their score at 46, even as Raiders racked up 60 points. It's not like Liberty Bell wasn't equal to the task, they just didn't do it. Worse, they continually fouled so LR would head to the free-throw line, racking up the Raider win...

  • Eagles end 56-year drought in Nespelem

    Scott Hunter|Dec 11, 2024

It's been a long time coming, but Nespelem saw a victory on their home basketball floor Saturday night, some 56 years (that was a best guess by school officials) after their last high school closed and their students started attending Graxnd Coulee Dam schools for high school. The Nespelem Eagles hosted the Columbia Lions, from Hunters, for the 68-31 win, which had to feel good after their 20-point loss at Republic the night before, 68-44. The Eagles are not playing in a league this year,...
