Class of 2020 makes it through

Attending to the video screen near the tennis court fence, graduates and their families watch as class speakers deliver their parting thoughts to the class. The Grand Coulee Dam School District hired Spokane Valley-based company AMP'D Lighting and Audio Visual for a price tag of just under $6,000. We'll provide links online.

Lake Roosevelt High School's class of 2020 made it through their final year, graduating Saturday night despite a year that seemed to conspire against them.

With the last quarter-plus of the year disrupted by the COVID-19 pandemic, the class that captured at least $191,000 in scholarships, according to the school's information, was denied many of the traditional gatherings of their last year, including spring sports. They adjusted to distance learning, isolation and a graduation ceremony in the athletic field parking lot.

Watching a video on a big screen barely adequate to see even in the dim daylight of a coming storm, they nonetheless could hear their class speakers and others clearly through professionally supplied sound and video.

Until the storm hit, that is, capping off their year by dispersing them and forcing the school to cut power for fear of lightening. Rain came down in sheets, the balloons blew away, and the last names were read off in a hurry.

But they'll be able to watch it in the videos, as will readers.

You can find other videos pre-recorded for the ceremony at the end of this story.

Here are their accolades and awards.
